I am in love, some may even say obsessed, with a chair. Yes, a chair. However, you won’t find this particular chair at your local furniture store or online at Pottery Barn. This chair wasn’t designed for kicking back and relaxing – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. This chair was created to tone and strengthen almost every muscle in your body, and enhance posture and balance too!
This chair is called a Wunda Chair or Pilates chair and, in my opinion, it should be called the The Most Amazing Chair in the World Chair.
The Reinvention Chair class in NYC takes this chair and pairs it with a bungee system to give you Chaise Fitness’ signature Reinvention Chair class -- or The Most Amazing Workout Class in the World Class!
Until recently, I had never heard of a Wunda Chair, Chaise Fitness, or the Reinvention Chair workout. When I stumbled upon the class online while researching the latest, greatest workouts for Bobby Flay Fit, I was immediately intrigued. First, the story of the mother/daughter team that owns Chaise Fitness (where Reinvention Class was conceived) Lauren and Rachel Piskin is incredible and inspirational. Lauren Pisken is a former figure skater and fitness guru and her daughter, Rachel Pisken, is a former NYC ballet dancer (read a recent story about them in Cosmopolitan).
The Reinvention Chair workout purported to combine Pilates, ballet and aerobics, all things that I absolutely love, in one class. Obviously, I had to check it out. So I grabbed my fellow B-Teamer and partner in all-things fitness, Elyse Tirrell, and walked the few short blocks from our office over to Chaise Fitness in the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan to check out a morning Reinvention Chair class.
Our instructor for the Reinvention Class that morning was Maria Carofano. In addition to being a certified instructor, she is also a professional dancer who has toured with Rihanna, Pitbull and Flo Rida and was a Knicks City dancer… She is beyond fit, and she teaches an amazing class.
Before class began, Maria (above center) explained how to properly operate the chair, hold the bungee cords and adjust the tension and how to do some of the moves that we would be doing in class that morning (ugh, the PIKE!). The class size is small and intimate, which I love because this allows the instructor to pay close attention to your form. And, like all great classes, it is set to really fun, upbeat pop music that keeps your momentum going no matter how tired you get or hard the moves become.
Maria led us through movements that seemed easy at first, until the burn set in and the sweat poured out. We worked nonstop -- arms, legs, core and glutes, plus some cardio -- and I kept looking forward to the challenge of the next move. Best of all, class flies by! 55 minutes feels like 30.
If you are looking for a new workout that is totally unique, challenging and fun, look no further than Chaise Fitness and the Reinvention Chair workout.
Heads up: There is a locker room but no shower. Water and towels available.
